Product Description
The sweet cherry plant, scientifically known as Prunus Avium is a deciduous fruit-bearing tree belonging to the rose family, Rosaceae.
KEY PLANT CHARACTERISTICS
HEIGHT & SPREAD: Mature orchard trees grow up to 6–10 meters (20–32 feet) tall, though grafted or air-layered (guti kolom) hybrid varieties grown in containers or home gardens are much smaller and manageable.
FOLIAGE & FLOWERS: Features alternate, simple, ovoid-pointed green leaves with serrated margins that turn brilliant shades of orange, red, or pink in autumn. It produces clusters of fragrant, five-petaled pure white blossoms in early spring.
FRUIT: Yields round to heart-shaped fleshy stone fruits (drupes) measuring 1–2 cm across, which ripen from bright red to deep purple-black with a sweet, juicy pulp.
GROWING REQUIREMENTS
SUNLIGHT: Requires full sun, needing about 6 to 8 hours of direct daily sunlight.
SOIL: Prefers rich, loamy, sandy-loam soils that are fertile and well-drained with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Avoid waterlogging.
WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing phase while ensuring proper drainage to prevent root rot.
CLIMATE & CHILL HOURS: Traditional standard sweet cherry varieties require temperate conditions and specific winter chill hours (700–800 hours below 45°F) to break dormancy and set fruit, though specialized tropical/subtropical or all-season hybrid container varieties are marketed for warmer climates.
POLLINATION: Many standard sweet cherry cultivars are not self-fertile and require cross-pollination from a second compatible cherry variety blooming at the same time.
