Product Description
The Rhoeo Plant scientifically known as Tradescantia spathacea (and previously Rhoeo discolor), is a resilient, clump-forming tender perennial foliage plant native to Central America and Mexico. It is widely celebrated for its striking sword-shaped leaves and low-maintenance nature, making it highly popular in Indian households as both a colorful indoor houseplant and an exceptional outdoor ground cover.
BOTANICAL PROFILE & QUICK OVERVIEW
COMMON NAMES: Moses-in-the-Cradle, Oyster Plant, Boat Lily, Moses-in-the-Bulrushes.
GROWTH HABIT: Compact, short-stemmed, mounding clumps.
DIMENSIONS: Typically grows up to 0.5 to 1 foot (15–30 cm) tall with a spreading habit.
FOLIAGE: The standard variety features bi-colored waxy leaves that are metallic green on top and vibrant purple underneath. The purple tint comes from natural plant pigments called anthocyanins.
FLOWERS: Produces small, white three-petaled flowers cradled inside unique, purple boat-shaped bracts tucked near the stem (hence the name "Moses-in-the-cradle").
ESSENTIAL CARE REQUIREMENTS
SUNLIGHT: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. It can tolerate full sun, but intense summer afternoon heat may scorch the leaves. Good lighting keeps variegation vivid.
WATERING: Treat it like a semi-succulent. Water only when the top 1 inch of soil dries out completely. It is highly drought-tolerant but highly vulnerable to root rot if over watered.
SOIL MIX: Requires sharply well-drained soil. An ideal potting mix includes 30% garden soil, 25% coco peat, 25% compost/vermicompost, and 20% perlite or coarse sand.
TEMPERATURE: Prefers a warm range between 20°C and 30°C (65°F to 85°F). It thrives beautifully in India's tropical climate but cannot handle freezing cold frost.
FERTILISER: Not a heavy feeder. Apply a standard organic fertilizer (like vermicompost) or a diluted liquid balanced fertilizer once every 30 to 40 days during spring and summer.
PROPAGATION
Rhoeo is incredibly easy to propagate, making it a budget-friendly option to expand your garden.
STEM OFFSHOOTS (OFFSETS): The plant naturally produces "baby" pups or nodes at the base. Simply snap or cut these offsets off and plant them directly into a fresh potting mix. They root reliably in 1 to 2 weeks without requiring initial water propagation.
TOXICITY & SAFETY NOTE
The sap of Tradescantia spathacea contains toxic calcium oxalate crystals. It can cause mild skin irritation or rashes (contact dermatitis) in humans and pets if the leaves are broken. It is best to wear gloves when pruning or propagating and to keep it out of reach of curious dogs and cats.
