Product Description
Green grape plants belong to the Vitis genus and are fast-growing, deciduous woody perennial vines that climb using tendrils. When grown at home, popular green (or "white") varieties like Thompson Seedless produce sweet, crisp table fruits ideal for snacking and juicing.
BOTANICAL PROFILE & CHARACTERISTICS
PLANT TYPE: Deciduous woody vining perennial.
Growth Habit: Climbing vine; requires strong physical support.
FRUITING CYCLE: Typically produces flowers and fruit on second-year wood (new growth emerging from last year's branches).
LIFE EXPECTANCY: Can thrive and produce fruit for decades with proper management
🌞 LIGHT & CLIMATE
SUNLIGHT: Requires 6 to 8 hours of direct daily sunlight minimum, though 12–14 hours in summer maximizes fruit sweetness.
TEMPERATURE: Thrives best in warm, dry climates with optimal growing temperatures between 20°C and 32°C.
🌱 SOIL & SPACING
SOIL TYPE: Loose, loam or sandy loam with excellent drainage. Sogginess causes root rot.
SOIL PH: Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral range of 6.0 to 7.0.
Spacing: Ground-planted vines must be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart in rows 8 to 10 feet apart to promote air circulation.
💧 WATERING & FERTILISING
WATERING: Needs deep, infrequent watering. Soaking the top 6 inches of soil once or twice a week is better than frequent light misting.
NUTRIENTS: Feed monthly during the active growing season with organic compost or a balanced low-nitrogen organic fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, which creates excessive leaves instead of fruit.
✂️ PRUNING & STRUCTURAL TRAINING
SUPPORT: Must be grown on a sturdy trellis, arbor, post, or fence because mature vines bearing fruit get very heavy.
WINTER PRUNING: Crucial for productivity. Vines are heavily pruned during winter dormancy. All growth from the previous year is cut back to select spurs/buds to stimulate vigorous fruit production the following spring.
