The bird of paradise plant (Strelitzia) is a popular tropical perennial known for its large, glossy, banana-like leaves and striking crane-like flowers of vivid orange and blue. Native to South Africa, it thrives as an architectural houseplant or outdoor garden feature.
KEY PLANT FEATURES
COMMON TYPES: Strelitzia reginae (smaller, 3 to 5 feet tall, with bright orange and blue flowers) and Strelitzia nicolai (Giant White Bird of Paradise, growing much taller with white-to-cream blooms).
LEAVES: Large, paddle-shaped, leathery foliage that naturally splits along the veins to withstand wind.

CARE REQUIREMENTS
SUNLIGHT: Requires very bright light, including several hours of direct sun daily to encourage blooming.
